Stampin' Up!, a 17-year-old, $220-million, direct-sales company, offers an exclusive line of decorative stamp sets and accessories for home décor, greeting cards, craft projects and scrapbooking. The company's size and recent growth reflect the nationwide passion for decorative rubber stamping.

Founded in 1988 by Shelli Gardner and her sister, the company is based in Utah with more than 500 employees. Stampin’ Up! introduces more than 100 new stamp sets and accessories annually in its full-color Idea Book & Catalog.

Stampin’ Up! products are not sold in stores but may be purchased at home workshops or through a network of independent sales consultants called Stampin’ Up! demonstrators. Currently, more than 40,000 demonstrators from all 50 states and Canada teach the art of stamping and share their enthusiasm for stamping, scrapbooking, and card making. States with the highest number of Stampin’ Up! demonstrators include California, Minnesota, Washington, Wisconsin and Michigan.

Stampin’ Up! operates two state-of-the-art facilities: a 40,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Kanab, Utah, and a 300,000-square-foot home office and distribution center in Riverton, Utah.

The evolution of Stampin' Up!

Shelli Gardner and her sister grew up in Kanab, Utah. They each married, left their hometown and started families. During this time they discovered rubber stamping and became instantly intrigued by the hobby. They searched for a rubber stamp company to meet their needs—one that offered a complete line of stamps and utilized the right direct-sales approach.

Unable to find the right mix, the two decided to build their own company. They imagined the possibilities of creating a stamp company that offered a wide variety of stamp styles, high-quality accessories and an ongoing commitment to customer service and sharing the art of rubber stamping with family and friends through home workshops.

They envisioned the company working much like a family, where each demonstrator could participate at whatever level worked best for her personal circumstances.

Shelli Gardner invested her family’s savings to begin Stampin’ Up! in 1988. During the first year, Shelli filled orders from her living room; now Stampin’ Up! employees take and fill orders from a 300,000-square-foot facility.

Initially Stampin’ Up! offered rubber stamps designed by other companies, but soon the company began custom designing, manufacturing and selling its own exclusive rubber stamp designs and accessories. The first Stampin’ Up! product catalog was 64 pages; today the Stampin’ Up! Idea Book & Catalog is 256 pages long and features more than 600 full-color photographs of stamp projects, as well as an impressive line of rubber stamps and accessories. Stampin’ Up!’s exclusive colors of paper, markers, stamp pads and refills virtually eliminate the guesswork involved in coordinating stamping projects.
